Get Ready to “Embrace Curiosity” This Year At TEDxDePereMiddleSchool!

DE PERE – De Pere Middle School is excited to announce the return of its live TEDxDePereMiddleSchool event on Friday, May 20, 8:25 am - 11:15 am. This event is one of the only TEDx events to exclusively feature 7th and 8th grade student speakers. In the spirit of TED’s “Ideas Worth Spreading”, the TEDx program allows anyone to organize a local, TED-like event.

TEDxDePereMiddleSchool will take place in the DPMS Auditeria and will feature an incredible line-up of student speakers on topics ranging from the benefits of writer’s block to the lessons we can learn from obscure myths and legends. The event will also be broadcast live at TEDxDePereMiddleSchool.com.

“The TEDx format is an invaluable learning tool for students,"  said Josh Gauther, one of the organizers of TEDxDePereMiddleSchool. “The research, planning and practice causes them to think about verbal communication in a way different from a traditional school speech assignment. They must be more concise, more focused and really let their passion for the topic shine through. The experience can be applied in so many ways going forward, from job interviews to college applications."

The independently produced event, operated under a license from TED, is organized by Donna Young and Josh Gauthier, educators at De Pere Middle School, and is aimed at providing an opportunity for students to share their passions, ideas and experiences.

Speakers include:

  • Melinda Cook sharing the surprising impact of lights in movies, theater, and life

  • Jane Tomashek challenging us to see the stories in everything around us

  • Gabriella Kozicki encouraging all of us to grow our brains…by learning an instrument

  • Olivia Kuhn revealing the strategies that can help you power through writer’s or art block

...and many more! The full list is available on our website.

Media and Press - We would love to have you cover our event! However, before you come, there are a couple of main rules. We are not able to allow you to record any part of a talk, or do any filming or take any pictures in the main theater. We can provide clips after the event, as well as photos from our official photographer. There will be breaks where you would have access to our speakers for interviews.

About TEDx

In the spirit of "ideas worth spreading," TED has created TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxDePereMiddleSchool, where x = independently organized TED event. At TEDxDePereMiddleSchool, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, often in the form of short talks delivered by leading thinkers and doers. Many of these talks are given at TED conferences, intimate TED Salons and thousands of independently organized TEDx events around the world. Videos of these talks are made available, free, on TED.com and other platforms. Audio versions of TED Talks are published to TED Talks Daily, available on all podcast platforms.

TED's open and free initiatives for spreading ideas include TED.com, where new TED Talk videos are posted daily; TEDx, which licenses thousands of individuals and groups to host local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; the TED Fellows program, which selects innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities; The Audacious Project, which surfaces and funds critical ideas that have the potential to impact millions of lives; TED Translators, which crowdsources the subtitling of TED Talks so that big ideas can spread across languages and borders; and the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED also offers [email protected], a program that reimagines TED Talks for workplace learning. TED also has a growing library of original podcasts, including The TED Interview with Chris Anderson, WorkLife with Adam Grant, Far Flung with Saleem Reshamwala and How to Be a Better Human.
